Biography
Ab-Originals is a weekly podcast of the hottest Aboriginal music in Canada. Four of the best-known musical hosts in Indian Country will bring you live concerts, urban and hip-hop music, top 10 chart artists, and all the rest of it in their musical podlatch.
Our hosts are: Suzette Amaya, producer and host of ThinkNDN – a hip hop music show that airs weekly on Co-Op Radio in Vancouver; Melissa Spence aka Miss Melissa from NCI-FM and Streetz FM in Winnipeg. She is also the host of the Top 30 National Aboriginal countdown and the music programmer for Streetz FM; Wab Kinew, needs no introduction; and a rotating fourth host position (guest hosts have included Brian Wright-McLeod, Leanne Goose and Kim Ziervogel).
Before this project began there were approx. 91 Aboriginal artists signed up on CBC Radio 3. There are now close to 300 artists with more joining daily.
Host Bio
Miss Melissa is a full-blooded First Nation Ojibway girl born and raised in Winnipeg. She comes from a family of big music lovers and knew from an early age that her calling would be music oriented. By the age of 25 Miss Melissa felt it was time to do more than just be a fan of music, she wanted to contribute her skills as a radio DJ to the rest of the world and be a part of what she’s loved her entire life: RADIO! After a quick course in broadcasting Miss Melissa landed her first gig in radio in Manitoba’s Parkland area and was quickly discovered by the NCI FM radio network which is where she still is today with the sister station STREETZ FM. She’s also the writer and host of The National Aboriginal Top 30 Countdown, a two-hour weekly show that airs on NCI FM along with 8 other Aboriginal Radio Networks across Canada. She’s very proud to be a part of CBC Radio 3’s Ab-Originals!
“My entire life is and will always be a constant celebration of music!” – Miss Melissa
