Biography

Jon-C is a Winnipeg-based MC who represents the First Nation experience of the citys troubled North End. Born Billy Pierson, this co-founder of Heatbag Records embarked on a hip-hop career to put a positive spin on his life after losing three close friends to a lifestyle of gangs, drugs, and run-ins with the law.

Jon-C's music pulls together the samples, melodies, instruments, rhythms and themes that people grow up with in Winnipegs North End. The rappers initial offering, entitled Jon-C Da General: Blood Sweat & Tears, includes 18 tracks with Peg City twists on club traditions, memorable choruses about the Heatbag experience, and production from a number of noteworthy beat makers. I Came a Long Way (track 6) is a great example; the song enlists a Dr. Dre-inspired piano hook (produced by Big Stomp of the JUNO-nominated Team Rezofficial), a solid chorus that makes you want to sing along, and clear verses that talk about Jon-Cs journey through adversity.

My revenge starts with personal redemption and my war is with a system that wants me to fail, explains Jon-C.

Jon-C has a strong local following, which helps him to sell concert tickets and build markets for his other businesses. For the last three years, the MC and his Heatbag Records roster have seen their audiences and businesses grow. Sold out shows are common for all members of the crew nowadays and two new clothing brands were recently added to their merchandising business - Pistols and Diamonds for men and BadAss Shorty for women - which are available through their online store.

Jon-C's song writing credits include verses on 10 urban releases in the last three years.
